U.S. Labor Migration: Politics and Policy
Daniel Costa
–
Director of Immigration Law and Policy, Economic Policy Institute
Labor migration
the movement of persons from one country to another for the purposes of employment is a complex and often controversial issue in most countries, including the United States. The ongoing debate about how many persons from abroad should enter the United States every year, and what the terms and conditions of their admission and employment should be, heated up during the 2016 election campaign and continues today.
Daniel Costa will offer a background on the basics of the U.S. labor migration system, including the various pathways through which migrants enter the U.S. labor market, and explore key themes within the overarching context of what a fair immigration system should look like
He will discuss the policies that have been implemented or proposed by the Trump administration relating to labor migration, as well as the debates and legislative proposals coming from Congress, and the influence of grassroots movements and corporate lobbying. Key topics will include immigration enforcement and deportations, family-based and “merit-based” immigration, and the politics of comprehensive immigration reform.
Ample time will be left for discussion and questions from the audience.
